Daylight

Daylight is our day centre offering informal education and training. It is open to homeless and/or unemployed young people aged 16 – 25. Daylight is accessed by young people living in our accommodation projects as well as those in the wider community.

Daylight offers a unique programme of activities designed to help young people gain control of their lives and halt the downward spiral of homelessness. Through participation in the programme young people can develop the skills and confidence needed for successful independent living.

At Daylight each day has a different theme and a different topic is covered within those themes each day:

Monday

Life and living skills

Tuesday

Literacy & Numeracy

Wednesday

Work skills

Thursday

Team pursuits

Friday

The Arts

This quarter's Daylight programme

Through Daylight young people can gain accreditation in literacy and numeracy and develop a range of transferable skills whilst facilitating exploration of other talents such as art, music and drama which build self-esteem and confidence as well as concrete skills. In addition we also run an Anger Management Course specifically for females.

In line with our mission statement, our work at Daylight is all about empowering homeless people and those facing adversity to achieve their full potential. The activities offered encourage the young people to take increasing levels of control and responsibility for making their own decisions and running their own lives.

Over the years the project has proved to be increasingly successful at helping young people to break the cycle of repeat homelessness by acquiring the skills, confidence and conviction needed to become independent adults and enabling them in various ways to be part of - and have a positive impact on - their community.

Female-only Anger Management
This seven-week programme is for those girls and women who find it difficult to control their anger, which can lead to abuse and violence. It aims to help clients to understand more about themselves and why they get angry. It also encourages them to improve their life chances by making a difference in their own behaviour and attitudes and to recognise that this also affects the lives of those with whom they interact at home and in the wider community.

Facilitated by staff from our D'n'A and Training services, the programme covers topics such as: understanding our anger and what triggers it; the physical effects of anger; and coping strategies. Each session lasts all day. The morning is spent exploring a particular aspect of anger and then, after lunch, there is a wind-down period involving therapeutic massage, acupuncture and counselling. One-to-one support and counselling are an important part of the process.

The programme is jointly funded by the Hampshire Police Authority and the Austin and Hope Pilkington Trust.
