Who we are...
Where we came from...
What we stand for...

Our history
Step by Step was created in 1989 to help young homeless people, many of whom have been victims of family breakdown, or have suffered abuse.

Originally known as Emmaus Projects, the first project opened in 1992, and we therefore have many years' experience of working with this client group. Historically based in Aldershot, this remains the epicentre of the organisation but we are increasingly being asked to provide our services to a wider community.

Our supported accommodation projects were set up over six years (1992 - 1998) in order to provide a series of stages with gradually increasing levels of independence.

Daylight, our first training project, was started in 1994 when we quickly realised that accommodation with support is not enough on its own. We needed to have a mechanism for teaching clients all kinds of skills to help move them forward. Since 1994 a variety of other training projects have been added to allow learning in different formats. In addition, we have offered counselling across our projects since 1996.

At Step by Step we try to encompass every aspect of the individual and work to enable them to develop and reach their potential. We provide accommodation, support and guidance, informal education and training, IT training, counselling and key working.

Our Staff
Step by Step has a large team of staff and volunteers who work together to ensure we maintain high standards of service. Our staff structure has evolved in the light of our experience and whilst it is constantly reviewed, we believe that it provides an effective balance between management control and employee empowerment. In addition to our staff and committee we have a number of volunteers supporting our work.

Overseeing the day-to-day work of the organisation we have a Board (six members), and a Management Committee (13 members, including two client members). In addition we have an Advisory Panel of nine members to support the work of the Board and Committee.

For more information, have a look at our organisation chart.

Mission, Vision, Values
