A village cricket match raised £315 for Step by Step this August.
Every summer a group of friends gather at Ockham in Surrey for a cricket match in aid of a charity chosen by the previous year's Man of the Match. In 2010, Paul Leather, one of our Support Workers, was that man, and so this year he chose Step by Step as the beneficiary. (It wasn't a difficult decision, he says!)
The match was played in glorious sunshine, in the centre of the beautiful Surrey village, with plenty of friends and family to support the players. Gill Butler, one of Step by Step’s community fundraisers went along with her cricket-loving son, Ethan. "It was a very enjoyable match to watch, in an idyllic setting and in perfect weather," Gill reported. "It was very generous of Paul to nominate Step by Step as his chosen charity and I am pleased to say that the match raised over £300 which will help to fund the training programmes which help our young clients to obtain work, training or a college placement."
Players and spectators showed a lot of interest in the work that Step by Step does in accommodating, training and supporting homeless young people between the ages of 16 and 25 years.
Paul commented "I have played three of these charity matches and this was by far the most enjoyable - and exciting! It was a very close match. With one ball left to play our opponents needed only one run to draw or two to win. Fortunately we took the wicket on the last ball with a run out, so we won the match. It was a great finish to a great day."
