Burns Night celebrations are more usually associated with drink than food, but Step by Step's popular fundraising event to celebrate the life and works of Scotland's premier poet promises to be the exception. With the meal cooked by one award-winning chef and an auction lot provided by a quarter-finalist from Masterchef the Professionals, guests can expect something very special on their plates.

This is the second year that Step by Step, the Aldershot-based charity which supports homeless young people and others facing adversity, has organised a Burns Night supper. Such was the success of last year's event that tickets for this year sold out very quickly. Held in the elegant and sumptuous surroundings of the Former Army Staff College at Sandhurst on Saturday, January 28th, all the traditional aspects of a Burns Night Supper will be observed, including piping in the haggis, a reading of the Address to a Haggis, and Lad's and Lassies speeches. Dancing, to local ceilidh band Jigworks will follow the supper and two charity auctions. The event is being generously sponsored by ENTOTA, the global provider of information management solutions based in Reading.

Rob Kennedy, who last year generously donated his services to cook a meal as an auction prize, will be cooking the four-course supper, which includes haggis, taties and neeps with fresh seasonal vegetables, and raspberry crème brulee with chocolate butter shortcake to follow. Rob has created a unique starter especially for the occasion: Smoked salmon parfait, a light mousse of fresh salmon topped with smoked salmon, surrounding a small marble of citrus dressing. Rob is the holder of a Craft Guild of Chefs award – the “Chefs' Oscar” - and will be competing in the semi-finals of the British Chef of the Year competition in Birmingham on January 23. He said: “As an award winning chef I am delighted to support your great charity for the second year running.”

One of the lots in the auction has been kindly donated by another up-and-coming chef, Shaun Collins, who featured in the quarter finals of Masterchef the Professionals last year, has kindly offered to cook a meal for six in the successful bidder's home.

Leanne Grubb, who is organising the event, said, “It's really encouraging when people like Rob and Shaun offer their services to help Step by Step. It shows that they understand and appreciate the work we do in helping young people out of homelessness and back into independence through training, mentoring and support.”

If you or your business, church or other organisation would like to support Step by Step in its work with over 850 young people each year, whether through special fundraising events, sponsorship or offering your skills and experience, Leanne and the Fundraising Team would be delighted to hear from you.
