We are very pleased to announce that Step by Step's HELP (Homeless Education Liaison Project) group has been awarded a High Sheriff of Surrey Award.
The HELP group is comprised of young people who are or have been homeless. They train to become peer educators and visit local schools and youth groups and educate on the realities of homelessness, how to avoid becoming homeless and where to seek help if needed. The overall aim is to reduce the number of young people becoming homeless.
Following a presentation at the Surrey Council for Voluntary Youth Service's 'Celebration of Youth' event last summer the group was invited to make an application for the High Sheriff of Surrey Award. The High Sheriff, Mr Adrian White CBE DL was so impressed that he increased the usual award size of £1,000 to £2,500.
Ivan Norris, HELP Project Worker said; "I'm very proud that the young people have received this award. They are thoroughly dedicated and committed to their work and spread an important and powerful homelessness prevention message to thousand of children every year. The award is a great boost to the project and we are delighted that we have been recognised in this way."
Mr White said that he had been enormously impressed by the work of Step by Step, more so than by any other charity that he had visited throughout his term of office which was drawing to a close.
