The Long Family from Hampshire recently undertook a gruelling five-day challenge to raise over £4,000 for Step by Step, the Aldershot based charity for homeless and disadvantaged young people. The four members of the family each cycled a total of 420 miles across France in five days as part of the annual ‘Paris to Hayling’ charity cycle ride.
Despite problems with snapped gear wires, damaged wheels and monsoon rains, the Longs: Mum Lisa, Dad David, and sons Kit (16) and Jamie (14), persevered, sometimes covering over 90 miles a day over hilly terrain. In keeping with the traditions of the ride - which has raised almost £1¼ million for over 500 charities since its inception in 1986 - the final day was spent riding in fancy dress. The Longs and the rest of their team dressed as Robin Hood and his Merry Men, complete with bright green tights and bows and arrows.
Was it worth it? “On reflection we had an amazing experience,” said David. “It was challenging for each of us, and the hills were a bit much at times, but the most important thing was to have raised so much money for such a worthwhile charity. We are really grateful to all our sponsors for their tremendous support.”
Leanne Grubb Community Fundraiser for Step by Step said “We were delighted when the Long Family chose us as their charity. It was a real challenge for them, and we want to thank them and everyone who sponsored and supported them, including the generous donation from Virgin Media, David’s employer. The money will go a long way towards helping vulnerable young people.”
Step by Step provides much more than a warm bed and a hot meal. It helps young people re-enter mainstream society by encouraging them to take responsibility for themselves, learning new skills and finding a job, college or training place. “Last year almost eight out of ten of our young service users achieved independence,” says Leanne. “A fantastic outcome not just for them but for the entire community.”
