Visitors to a routine Training Services session at Step by Step last week found themselves getting their hands dirty - literally. Cllr. Alex Crawford, Mayor of Rushmoor, and Barney Jeavons, Director of the West End Centre, dropped in to check on the progress of a tepee that Step by Step clients are constructing for West End Centre's Westival weekend and they were immediately invited to add their hand prints to the artwork. Cllr Crawford said “I enjoyed lending a helping hand. The Mayoress and I are looking forward to going to Step by Step at the beginning of August for a longer visit, so that we can learn more about the wonderful work that they do for homeless young people and others facing difficulties in the area.”
Step by Step has been nominated as a joint beneficiary of Westival, along with the Vine Day Care Centre. “I've always been very impressed with the work Step by Step does, and with their young people,” said Barney Jeavons. “We thought it would be great if they could get involved with Westival in a practical way, and so we invited them to construct a tepee for the special acoustic stage we're building in the Gallery.”
Westival runs over the weekend 22/23 July at the West End Centre in Queen's Road, Aldershot. It claims to be 'the most weatherproof festival in the world' and has an impressive line up of bands and arts-based activities. Families will be particularly interested in the Saturday afternoon session from 2 – 6pm, when there's lots to do for all ages. You can even picnic indoors on real grass!
Based in Crimea Road, Step by Step provides stepped accommodation and one-to-one support for young people to enable them to overcome their difficulties. Over three-quarters of the 500+ young people that the charity sees each year make positive progress towards independent living.
