New service AIMS high for Aldershot's youth

Step by Step has been awarded the contract to provide the youth advice, information and guidance service in Aldershot, in partnership with Hampshire County Council Children’s Services and Rushmoor Borough Council. The contract was previously run by the Hampshire Youth Bureau (HYB). The service, which is called Youth AIMS (Advice, Information and Mediation Service), enables young people promptly to access the help they need on a wide variety of topics, including accommodation, advice and support on relationships, substance abuse, education, and health issues.

Amanda Dubarry, Chief Executive of Step by Step, said “We have recognised for some time the benefits of integrating the work of this service with our own, and we are delighted that this has now been achieved.”

One of the major benefits of Youth AIMS becoming an integral part of Step by Step’s services is to provide a single referral pathway for homeless people in Rushmoor, enabling young people to receive support as soon as required and in a more unified way. Only one interview process needs to be completed, which leads to more efficient use of resources, and enables staff to devote more time to helping clients. In addition, it will be easier for young people to access Step by Step’s Family Mediation support which is an important means for mending broken relationships within families, which can lead to homelessness.

Four members of the Hampshire Children’s Services staff will work alongside Step by Step, delivering this service and bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to the team.
