Training Services

Daylight residential picnicWorking with our accommodation services, our Training Services focus on increasing the skills and building the self-confidence of our clients. Young people are engaged in a range of informal activities designed to halt the downward spiral of self-destruction by providing clients with opportunities so they may make the very best of their adult lives.

One-to-one keyworking is an essential part of our training process, helping to identify where a training activity would be beneficial to a young person and supporting them through it by agreeing objectives and evaluating progress.

Our Training Services include the following:

  • First Steps - general support and training in basic life skills such as cooking, cleaning, laundry, money management, and physical and sexual health.

  • Second Step - This is a programme of more specific training and includes 'Don't bottle it', a course in Anger Management for females, Fallout (aimed at reducing offending behaviour), and D'n'A Workshop, which tackles issues surrounding the use of drugs and alcohol.

  • Education and Employment - Activities, including NEET to EET are designed to get young people back into employment, education or training. They include Job Shop and 1-2-1 support. Business Development & Craft combines skill training with experience of how business operates and helps to improve literacy/numeracy skills and self-confidence.

  • Support & Diversionary Activities - This service includes activities to educate, inform and provide an outlet for creative and physical energy. Activities include CyberShed, a 12-computer IT suite offering access to the Internet and experience in basic computer skills, often used for researching and applying for jobs, training or education places. Physical Health/Activity encourages participation physical team sports and activities and helps to promote healthy living. Music & Media offers training and experience in the media arts. Other 'ad hoc' activities are organised when a need is identified and resources are available.

  • Volunteer and Peer Education - We have three peer education projects, in which teams of our young people go out into the community to educate other young people about the realities of homelessness (HELP), the relationship between homelessness and alcohol (HAL) and the dangers inherent in the misuse of drugs and alcohol (Dr.Al) Presentations are often given as part of a school's Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) programme.

Other programmes in the service include Client Ambassadors, training and encouraging clients to act as ambassadors for Step by Step, the Client Council which provides a useful forum for discussion between clients and management. Other volunteering opportunities are also offered where appropriate.

  • Client Counselling - is a general service for all clients and mostly takes place during regular one-to-one keyworking sessions which each client attends.

The programmes are developed to enable clients to develop towards their full potential by:

  • taking more control of their adult lives

  • learning to be a team player and trust others

  • increasing their self-esteem and self-confidence

  • realising their potential and gain the motivation to progress successfully

  • developing new skills to live, work and become an active and successful part of their wider community
