Supported Lodgings - Becoming a Host
Supported Lodgings offer an opportunity for young people to seek advice, guidance, and support from a caring Host.
At Step by Step we have paid opportunities for Hosts to join our support network. Full training and ongoing support is given as part of this opportunity.
"I applied to be a host to make a difference and, although an over-used phrase; to pay something forward. I could have done with someone like me when I was 16 years old - young, vulnerable, alone, and making risky / dangerous choices; it doesn't need to be like that if you can offer safety and stability to a young person." ~ Step by Step Host

Could you Help?
Most young people experience some difficulties when they leave their family home. In Britain the average age for leaving home is 23 which contrasts sharply with young people leaving the care of local authorities, where the age is generally only 16 or 17.
Teenagers who have been in care or have been forced to leave home due to family problems often find themselves struggling to cope alone. Many lack the confidence and basic skills to live independently. Without the support of a family, the experience can be truly traumatic.
The Supported Lodgings service, managed by Step by Step, bridges this gap between being at home or being in care, and living independently in the community. Usually all that is needed is a listening ear, but inevitably some young people will need more help than others.
Being able to provide this option to young people is dependent on having suitable Hosts across all of our areas: Hampshire, West Berkshire, Surrey, and Dorset.
Is this for you?
Hosts are the foundation of supported lodgings. they are ordinary people from all walks of life who share two main things in common.
- They have at least one spare room and
- They want to help a young person experiencing hard times, have a bright future.
Hosts may be ordinary people, but they make extraordinary things happen by proving accommodation, support and guidance to young people as they navigate the middle and end of their teens and grow into early adulthood.
Support for Hosts
Hosts have access to a well-established support network. This includes 24/7 On Call (telephone advice) service, regular Placement Reviews (with young person, Host and Step by Step worker) and full, ongoing training.
