Do you have a Spare Room?

Saturday 29th October 2016

Step by Step ask, "Do you have a spare room?" in their recruitment for paid hosts within their Supported Lodgings service.

It's not every day that Step by Step's Supported Lodgings Support Workers set themselves up in a shopping centre with a cardboard box, a sleeping bag, and a camp bed ... wearing branded onesies. But this is how Lisa Chrichard and Nikki Reid are spending their day in Aldershot town centre's Wellington Centre today. Lisa and Nikki came up with this creative appeal for additional hosts when the Wellington Centre generously offered the space for the day.

Lisa said, "We didn't want to pass up this opportunity to talk with local people about the opportunity to join Step by Step as paid Supported Lodgings hosts."

By providing accommodation within local homes, Step by Step's Supported Lodgings offer an opportunity for young people to seek advice, guidance, and support from a caring host.

Most young people experience some difficulties when they leave their family home.

In Britain the average age for leaving home is 23 which contrasts sharply with young people leaving the care of local authorities, where the age is generally only 16 or 17.

The Supported Lodgings Programme managed by Step by Step aims to bridge this gap between being at home or being in care, and living independently in the community. Inevitably some young people will need more support and mentorship than others, and Step by Step provide full training and support to equip each host.

Could you help? We need people from all walks of life; married or single, young or not so young, with or without children. There is no 'standard profile' for a Supported Lodgings host - people from a wide variety of backgrounds, experience and circumstances tell us that they find the role truly rewarding and enjoyable.

"I applied to be a host to make a difference and, although an over-used phrase; to pay something forward. I could have done with someone like me when I was 16 years old - young, vulnerable, alone, and making risky / dangerous choices; it doesn't need to be like that if you can offer safety and stability to a young person." ~ Step by Step Host
