Every young person has the potential to be a hero in their own story. Just like superheroes who had someone to guide and support them—Batman had Alfred, Superman had the Kents, and Paddington Bear had the Brown family—all young people need caring individuals to help them realise their potential. By opening your home and heart, you can play a vital role in supporting a young hero facing adversity. Whether you have time to provide full-time care as a foster carer or prefer the flexibility of being a Supported Lodgings Host, there is a role for you with Step by Step.

Becoming a Foster Carer or a Supported Lodgings Host means more than providing shelter—it’s about being the supportive figure behind a young person’s journey to becoming their own hero. Here’s how each role can fit your lifestyle:

  • Fostering: Offers the chance to provide a nurturing, full-time home environment for a young person. This role involves a deeper level of engagement, providing day-to-day care, guidance, and support, much like the Kents did for Superman or Alfred did for Batman.
  • Supported Lodgings: Allows you to offer a safe, supportive space while helping young people transition to independence. This role is less time-intensive, making it ideal for those with other commitments but who still want to make a positive impact—much like the Brown family did for Paddington Bear.

We know that being the person behind the hero isn’t always easy, but you won’t be doing it alone. At Step by Step, we provide comprehensive support to ensure you feel confident and prepared every step of the way:

  • Regular Visits and Support: You will receive regular visits and support from your dedicated Step by Step Social Worker and, if fostering, the young person's Social Worker. For Supported Lodgings, a Placement Worker will provide tailored support.
  • Comprehensive Training: Our training sessions cover all aspects of fostering and hosting, from understanding trauma to managing challenging behaviours, ensuring you’re prepared to support young people on their journey.
  • Access to a Supportive Network: Join a community of foster carers and hosts who are committed to guiding young people towards their full potential.
  • Financial Support: Both roles come with financial assistance to cover costs, including tax exemptions for foster care income, so you can focus on what matters most—being there for a young person.

Deciding to become a foster carer or Supported Lodgings Host is a big step, and it’s important to understand what’s involved. Here are some key considerations:

  • Do You Have a Spare Room and a Willing Heart?: Whether you have a lot of time or just a little, your willingness to provide a stable and supportive environment is what matters most. Just like the Browns offered Paddington a loving home while he found his way in a new world, your support can shape a young person's future.
  • Are You Ready to Make a Difference?: Both roles require empathy, patience, and a desire to help young people grow and thrive. If you’re looking to give back to your community in a meaningful way, this could be perfect for you.
  • Interested in Earning While Making an Impact?: Both fostering and supported lodgings offer financial compensation to support you in your role, including allowances and potential tax benefits.
