Building Bridges with Willmott Dixon

  • 31 July 2019

A team from Willmott Dixon recently visited our Aldershot headquarters to run a workshop for young people. The session involved industry insight, a practical challenge and dried spaghetti.

Alongside accommodation and mental health support, we believe that giving young people personal development opportunities and life skills are essential if they are to achieve their full potential. Construction specialists Willmott Dixon share this philosophy and enjoy a great partnership with us.

The workshop started with the Willmott Dixon team talking about careers in construction, dispelling the myth that it is just about manual labouring and discussing the increasingly prominent role of women in the industry.

The session then moved on to a practical exercise, with the young people tasked with designing and building their own bridges. After sketching out their design and thinking about budget, the participants had to choose from a range of materials, including plastic blocks, marshmallows and dried spaghetti, and then build models of their designs.

The team from Willmott Dixon were engaging and passionate, and this contributed to a very successful session, with the participants interested and inspired. Many of the young people even applied for CSCS accreditation that would allow them to start work in the construction industry.

Willmott Dixon have a comprehensive Corporate Social Responsibility program and Step by Step are delighted to have been chosen as a partner charity. The partnership is already showing demonstrable benefits to the young people we support.
