During Foster Care Fortnight, Step by Step held seven stalls across the South to raise awareness of fostering and speak with local communities about the difference foster carers can make in a young person’s life.
From Southampton and Salisbury to Reading, Bracknell, Basingstoke, Southbourne, and Netley, the fortnight gave our team the opportunity to speak with local communities, answer questions, and connect with people interested in learning more about fostering and the wider work of the charity.
Throughout the campaign, we met prospective foster carers, spoke with people interested in Supported Lodgings, received donations, and shared information about Step by Step’s services.
Each event brought different opportunities to connect with local communities. At John Lewis Southampton, the team spoke with people interested in fostering and raised donations in support of the charity. Basingstoke Market and Salisbury Market created opportunities to speak with members of the public about fostering and the work of Step by Step, despite challenging weather conditions at times.
Southbourne Food & Fun Fest was one of the busiest events of the fortnight, with all fostering leaflets distributed within the first few hours and several people requesting further information about fostering. At The Lexicon in Bracknell, the team also met a former resident of our Aldershot Foyer, who shared the positive impact Step by Step had on her life.
At The Oracle in Reading, the team had several meaningful conversations with people interested in finding out more about fostering, while The Big Eat in Netley helped raise awareness with a broad range of local visitors and families.
The fortnight also highlighted the value of being present within local communities and creating opportunities for open conversations about fostering and support for young people.

Step by Step CEO Debbie Moreton is leading by example at the Step by Step abseil on Saturday 11th July.
Debbie will be taking on the daunting 100 metre drop, representing the charity and the hundreds of young people we support every year. This is despite Debbie's paralysing fear of heights.
