We are delighted to introduce Lucy Barnes, joining our Board of Trustees in the key role of Company Secretary. She tells us about the role and why she wanted to volunteer for Step by Step.
What is your role on the board and what does it involve?
I am responsible for working with the Chair of the Board and the CEO to ensure effective governance of Step by Step, as well as statutory compliance with Companies House and the Charity Commission.
What is your background?
I am a lawyer by profession, originally training as a company lawyer and then doing professional development over the last decade or so. I am now looking to focus my career on practising law again.
Why did you want to join Step by Step?
I have had a number of local charity roles and I was looking to do something voluntary that was a bit wider than my very local community. The great thing about this role is that it allows me to support a wonderful cause while bringing together the two facets of my career: legal work, and a deep interest in people and their development.
What I particularly like about Step by Step is that it doesn’t just shelter young people, but gives them the tools, confidence and support to get their life back on track.
What do you bring to the role?
I bring my legal knowledge and enjoyment of working with a very eminent Board, as well as a sense of humour. I feel like I know everyone in the team, but have yet to meet anyone face to face. I hope I can do so soon!
What do you hope to achieve in the role?
I hope to maintain the high standards of governance put in place by Alan, the previous Company Secretary, and work with the Board to take the charity through these difficult times and through the 2020s.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Our three children (aged 12, 10 and 8) keep me pretty busy. If I did have spare time, I would play a game of tennis and practise my harp!
