Last night, five of our staff team accompanied two young people to the Foyer Federation Foyer Awards 2017. Jordan, one of the young people, was nominated in the Unsung Hero (Young Person) category while Lorraine, one of the staff team, was up for the Unsung Hero (Staff) category.
Matt, also supported by Step by Step, has been on an incredible journey during his time with us. He loves music, particularly grime, and last night took to the stage to rap for the attendees of the event.
Following Matt's performance, Step by Step were called to the stage as WINNERS in the Foyer of the Year category.
The Foyer Awards recognise achievements and dedication throughout the network of around 100 Foyers. To win the award gives the highest level of credibility to our work. Young people are at the centre of every development within Step by Step and our focus remains on young people's skills, talents, and aspirations. To have Matt performing at the event really crystallises how we work with young people to empower them and support them to achieve exactly what they set out to.
After the award was presented, Debbie Moreton, Head of Young People's Services said, "Whilst young people come to us when they are facing hard times, our focus on their skills and talents enables them to look forward to a brighter future."
Sarah Mowatt, STEP Worker who worked alongside Matt said, "After hearing him practice night after night ... he just slay some demons right there on stage! He totally deserves all the applause, what an achievement!"
