For every one pound invested, Step by Step generates £6.80 in social value.
That was the headline finding of our recently-commissioned Social Return on Investment research. This was co-produced by Nicola Lynch, Advanced Social Value Practitioner, and the Step by Step team, as a way to measure the impact the charity has on our beneficiaries and wider society.
What is SROI?
Individuals, organisations and communities continually create or erase social value. This
social value goes far beyond what can be captured in pounds and pence.
SROI is centred on an exploration of value, not financial benefit. It uses money as a proxy because money is a familiar unit and a widely accepted way of conveying value.
How Did We Measure the SROI?
The research gathered a wide array of data, including case studies, interviews and online
surveys. It identified the stakeholders, which in this case meant any person or organisation
that experienced change as a result of Step by Step’s actions, and then measured the
resultant outcomes.
The stakeholders were asked to rank the importance of each outcome so that a value could be attributed. This value was then used with an estimate of the number of people affected by each outcome to produce the final SROI figure.
