Debbie Moreton, Step by Step CEO, was recently invited to speak at a Spark Catcher session at the Old Bond Store, Southampton. These are a series of inspiring talks from leaders at the top of their game, sharing their experiences and motivations. In terms of insight and inspiration, Debbie’s talk did not disappoint.
In a session entitled “From Foster Carer to Charity CEO”, Debbie shared her journey – how taking on her first foster son ignited her passion for working with young people, ultimately leading her to Step by Step. Over the next few years, Debbie went from working in a number of frontline services, to finally becoming CEO – a popular appointment due to her dedication to the cause and passion for affecting change.
Debbie went on to talk about the services we provide and the impact we make, and reflect on a couple of young people’s stories particularly close to her heart, before a Q&A that prompted some great discussions.
"Sharing my journey, from foster carer to charity CEO, was both humbling and inspiring,” Debbie reflected. “I was overwhelmed by the engagement in the room and the impact my story had – sparking conversations, new connections, and even direct action. It reinforced the power of storytelling in driving change and breaking down barriers. A truly memorable evening!"
Debbie ended her hour-long session with a call to action, encouraging those present to join us in taking a stand against youth homelessness, whether through donations, becoming a host or foster carer, or joining us at a Step by Step event.
The session was a fantastic opportunity to connect with influential individuals and business leaders – potential allies in our mission to combat youth homelessness and its causes.
Layla was one of the first beneficiaries of our extended Supported Lodgings service. These are places that receive additional funding in order to extend the duration of the placement and provide support at a critical point in a young person’s journey towards independence.
