A crew of young people from Step by Step will be taking part in the Channel Nab Tower Pursuit challenge on Saturday 15th June. The Royal Artillery Yacht Club is kindly lending Step by Step their Bombardier III yacht to help raise funds while honing the skills and teamwork of the young people involved.
Alongside the trainee crew, the Bombardier III will be skippered by Step by Step volunteer, Matthew Sleap. Matthew is a veteran of many sailing challenges and is keen to use his experience to raise funds for Step by Step. He works alongside the Step by Step Fundraising Team by giving presentations, providing workshops and raising awareness in the community.
“When I visited the Aldershot Foyer for an introductory tour three years ago, I was so impressed by the commitment and energy of the staff that I wanted to volunteer straight away,” Matthew said.“There is a structured approach to helping young people at Step by Step that establishes their self-confidence and brings out the best in their talents.”
The Nab Tower Pursuit challenge is the latest way Matthew is using his talents to support Step by Step. He will help train the young people and hone their skills in a workout on the Friday. They will then take to the Channel the next day, setting off from the Hornet Services Sailing Club in Gosport and attempting to achieve the fastest time around the Nab Tower.
There will be a reception afterwards for all the yacht crews and guests. This will include a prizegiving for the best times, most funds raised for charity and smartest crew. There may also be some specific sailing challenges along the course.
Look out for news and photos after the event.
