If you're feeling low, anxious or just not yourself — or if you're worried about a young person in your care — you're not alone. Life can be tough, especially during your teenage years or early twenties, when emotions, relationships and expectations can feel overwhelming. At Step by Step, we offer a free counselling service for young people. It's a safe, confidential space to talk things through with someone who listens, understands, and won't judge.
We provide counselling to young people who are registered with a GP in Surrey (aged 11–25) or in Hampshire (aged 11–18).
Sessions are free, private and tailored to the young person’s needs. Counselling is delivered by experienced, fully qualified therapists who specialise in supporting young people. Sessions are available both in-person and online, depending on location and individual preference.
Referrals can be made by parents, carers, professionals or the young person themselves. Please note:
Counselling is a one-to-one conversation with a trained professional in a safe, private setting. It's a place where young people can talk about whatever's on their mind, without fear of judgement or pressure.
Young people come to Step by Step Counselling for many different reasons, including:
There is no problem too small. If you’re finding things tough, or if someone you care about needs support, Step by Step Counselling can help you process feelings and feel more in control.

You can refer yourself if you meet the age and GP registration criteria. Parents, carers or professionals can also refer.
We aim to offer a first appointment as soon as possible. Waiting times can vary, but we will keep you informed. Our waiting times are frequently lower than other providers of NHS counselling services.
At Step by Step, what you share in counselling is not shared with parents or carers unless there is a risk of harm to you or someone else.
Your privacy is always respected. Our aim is to create a space where you feel completely safe to talk openly.
That’s okay. We want you to feel comfortable. If something isn’t working, we can talk about it and look at your options.
If the young person is registered with a GP in Surrey and aged 11–25, you can refer via our online form.
