How Can I Leave Money In My Will

Fundraise or Donate How Can I Leave Money in My Will? A Step-by-Step Guide

Leaving a gift in your Will is a powerful way to make a lasting difference. If you’re thinking about supporting Step by Step through a legacy donation, this guide will walk you through the practical steps involved. Whether you’re writing a Will for the first time or updating an existing one, we’re here to help you take that next step with confidence.

Why Leave a Gift in Your Will?

A legacy gift allows your values to live on. By supporting Step by Step, you can:

  • Provide safe accommodation for young people at risk of homelessness
  • Fund mental health and wellbeing support
  • Help get young people into work, education and independent living
  • Help us meet the changing needs of future generations

Every gift, no matter the size, plays a part in transforming young lives. Read more about why legacy gifts matter.

Our Step by Step Guide

Step 1: Decide on the Type of Gift You’d Like to Leave

There are several ways you can leave a gift:

  • A fixed amount – a specific sum of money
  • A share of your estate – known as a residuary gift
  • A particular item – such as jewellery, property, or shares
  • What remains after other gifts – ensuring loved ones are looked after first

A solicitor or Will-writing expert can help you choose what’s right for you.

Step 2: Choose the Charity (or Charities) You’d Like to Support

It’s important to include the full legal name and registered charity number:

Step by Step Partnership Ltd
36 Crimea Road, Aldershot, Hampshire, GU11 1UD
Registered Charity Number: 900308

Step 3: Speak to a Solicitor or Will-Writing Professional

If you don’t yet have a Will, a solicitor can help you create one. If you already have a Will, they can help you add a legacy gift using a simple codicil.

Be sure to use the correct wording and confirm that your wishes are clear and legally sound.

Step 4: Talk to Your Family About Your Wishes

While this step is optional, many people find it reassuring to speak to their family or executors about their decision. It can help avoid surprises later and give loved ones peace of mind.

Step 5: Let the Charity Know – If You Feel Comfortable

There is no obligation to inform Step by Step, but we would love the chance to thank you and keep you updated on our work. It also helps us plan ahead more effectively.

You can reach our Fundraising Team at fundraising@stepbystep.org.uk for a confidential conversation.

Extra Tips to Keep in Mind

  • Tax benefits: Gifts to registered charities are exempt from Inheritance Tax.
  • Safe storage: Keep your Will in a secure location and tell someone where it is.
  • Updates: Life changes – and so might your wishes. You can revise your Will at any time with professional help.
