Can I Be a Foster Carer If I Work Full Time?

Yes, you absolutely can. Many of our foster carers work full time and still provide the stable, nurturing environment that children and young people need to thrive. At Step by Step, we understand that fostering has to work around real life. This article explores how fostering fits alongside employment, what really matters in your application, and how we support working carers like you every step of the way.

You Can Foster While Working

It’s one of the most common questions we hear: Can I be a foster carer if I have a job? The short answer is yes. In fact, many of our current carers are working professionals, part-time employees, or self-employed.

What matters most is not the number of hours you work, but whether you can offer:

  • A safe, welcoming home
  • Time and emotional availability to a child or young person
  • Stability and commitment
  • Flexibility when needed

Fostering isn’t a 9-to-5 role, but it also doesn’t require you to be home 24/7. The reality is much more flexible, and we tailor support to fit your lifestyle.

What Matters More Than Your Working Hours

Being a foster carer is about presence, not just availability. You don’t need to quit your job to be a strong role model. What’s more important is:

  • A support network – Do you have friends, neighbours or family who could step in in an emergency?
  • Time management – Can you adapt your working hours or use leave if necessary?
  • Emotional readiness – Are you in a place where you can offer guidance, care and consistency?

If you can answer yes to the above, your working pattern is unlikely to be a barrier.

How Fostering Works Around Your Life

We take great care to match young people with carers who suit their lifestyle and availability. That means we work with you to understand your job, schedule, and home environment before placing a young person.

While you can work full-time with most fostering arrangements, there are different types of fostering that may work better for people with full-time roles, including:

  • Short-term fostering: This can range from a few weeks to a few months, depending on availability.
  • Emergency placements: Some carers provide short notice support if their job allows for flexibility.

Support and Training for Working Foster Carers

We know you’re busy – and we work around that. Step by Step offers:

  • Flexible training sessions, including evenings and online options
  • Ongoing support, from our specialist team
  • Peer mentoring and connection with other carers
  • Emergency assistance when things don’t go to plan

You’re never alone on this journey. From your first enquiry to your first placement and beyond, we’re here.

What If I’m Not Sure Yet?

That’s completely okay. Fostering is a big decision. But taking the first step doesn’t mean committing straight away.

Many of our carers started with the same question you have. Today, they’re heroes in young people’s lives.
