If you’re aged 16–24 and need a safe place to live, Step by Step’s supported accommodation can help.
From living with a supportive host or in supported accommodation, we’ll help you find the option that works best for you. You don’t need to figure it out on your own. We’re here to listen, guide and support you.
Everyone's story is different. That’s why we take the time to understand your needs, your background and what kind of support feels right for you.
We work with local councils, and have experienced hosts, and support workers to provide safe and stable housing for young people aged 11 to 25. Our goal is not just to give you a place to stay, but to help you build the skills and confidence to move forward with your life.
Depending on your age, needs and situation, there are a few different types of supported housing available through Step by Step. Explore your options below.
If you are unsure, or need to speak to someone about urgent accommodation, please contact our Launch team.
Live with a supportive and experienced host who provides you with your own room and guidance as you prepare for independence. You’ll learn life skills, build confidence, and get support from both your host and Step by Step.
Live in a shared building with your own room and 24/7 staff support. You’ll be part of a respectful community and get help with things like budgeting, job hunting, and emotional wellbeing.
If you're younger or need more day-to-day support, foster care might be the right option. You’ll live with a supportive foster carer in a stable home while you and your support network make decisions together about what comes next.
If you're ready to live with others your age and manage more of your own responsibilities, a house or flat share could be an option. It offers more independence, but you’ll still be able to access support from services like Launch, our free advice and guidance offering one-to-one support for young people aged 11-25.
Not exactly. Hostels are usually for adults and some don't offer personalised support. Step by Step’s Foyers are specifically for young people aged 16–24. They're safe, supported environments with trained staff and a focus on helping you move forward, not just giving you a bed.
If you're not working and receive Universal Credit, your rent and bills are usually covered by housing benefit, except for a small personal contribution. If you’re working, you might be expected to pay more, depending on how much you earn. We’ll explain how it works and help you budget. If you’re earning, you might also want to consider our Move-On Accommodation, which is more affordable for people in work.
Absolutely. We believe that access to education and meaningful work is a right for every young person. The whole principle of a Foyer is that it's not just about having a roof over your head – it's about building a future. We’ll support you to balance work or study with your stay, helping you move towards lasting independence. Many young people in Supported Accommodation are in college, training, or working part-time, and we’ll be there to support you every step of the way.
Yes, you can. Please contact our Launch team and we’ll guide you through what to do next.
Yes, you can bring your belongings. We’ll help you settle in and make your space feel like home.
Yes, but there are some ground rules to make sure everyone feels safe and respected. We’ll talk to you about visits and what’s okay in your Foyer.
In Supported Accommodation, you live in a shared building with staff always on-site. In Supported Lodgings, you live in the home of a trained host. Both offer support, just in different ways. If you’re not sure which is right for you, we can help you decide.
That’s completely okay. You don’t need to have all the answers. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious or just have questions, we’re here to talk it through with you.
We’ll help you understand your options and find the next right step.
