Can I Foster if My Children Are Still Living at Home?

Many potential foster carers worry that having children at home will disqualify them. The good news? It won’t — and your experience as a parent might just make you the hero a child or young person needs. Here’s what you need to know, and how fostering can work with your family life.

You Don’t Need an Empty Nest to Make a Difference

Fostering with Your Family Can Work Beautifully

At Step by Step, we welcome foster carers with children of all ages. In fact, families with children at home often bring an extra layer of warmth, empathy and understanding to the fostering journey.

Your experience raising your own children is an invaluable asset. You understand routines, resilience, and the ups and downs of family life. Many fostered children and young people have never experienced a stable, caring home — your family can show them what one looks like.

What You’ll Need to Foster with Children at Home

Space to Grow

You’ll need a spare bedroom for any fostered child or young person. This ensures they have privacy and space to feel secure. It’s also important that everyone in your household, including your own children, is on board with the idea of fostering.

At Step by Step, we involve your whole family in the process. We offer information sessions, family preparation materials, and support tailored to your unique home dynamic.

Support from Step by Step

Our team is with you every step of the way:

  • Full training before you begin
  • Access to advice and support whenever you need it
  • A dedicated social worker and local coordinator
  • Peer support from other foster families

We’ll help you navigate any challenges, manage family boundaries, and create a positive experience for everyone in your home.

Common Concerns – Answered

"Will it upset my children?"

It’s natural to be protective of your own children. But many families find that fostering enriches their lives. It opens conversations about kindness, difference, and resilience.

Step by Step helps prepare your children for the role they will play, making sure they feel heard, respected, and safe. For younger children, it can help build compassion and maturity. For teens, it can reinforce leadership and a sense of social responsibility.

"What if it doesn’t work out?"

We take care to match children and young people with the right families. But we also know that challenges can arise. That’s why we offer:

  • Ongoing training
  • Mediation support
  • Respite care options
  • The ability to pause or step back if needed

Your wellbeing and your family's stability are always prioritised.

How to Take the Next Step

Becoming a foster carer isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being present, prepared, and willing to offer care. If you have the space and the heart to help, we’re here to support you.
