About Step by Step Our Commitment to Net Zero

Step by Step is committed to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and to achieving net zero by 2050. Our Board of Trustees has approved this commitment.

Why Net Zero Matters to Us

The young people we support will live with the effects of climate change for longer than any of us. Looking after their future means looking after the world they're growing up in, as well as the homes and support we provide today.

What We're Doing Now

  • Measuring where we start. Our Business Services Manager is leading a Net Zero baseline assessment, so our targets are built on real data. We expect to complete it by October 2028.
  • Our Greening Policy sets out how we reduce our environmental impact across our services and offices.
  • Less travel. We plan visits efficiently, choose well-connected locations and encourage public transport and cycling.
  • Paperless working. We use digital records, tablets and e-signatures.
  • Energy and waste. We give staff, hosts and young people practical guidance on saving energy and on reducing, reusing and recycling.
  • Young people. Sustainable living is part of the life skills we teach, and we encourage young people to get involved in local environmental projects.

Reporting Our Progress

Once our baseline is complete, we'll set interim targets and update this page each year. Our Leadership Team and Board will review our progress.
