Volunteer What Will I Be Doing as a Step by Step Volunteer?

Volunteering is an incredibly rewarding way to make a difference, but many people hesitate because they are unsure what it actually involves. At Step by Step, we value your time, energy, and goodwill. Whether you have a few hours to spare or want to make volunteering part of your routine, we have a role for you. Every volunteer helps us take a stand against youth homelessness. Here's what that looks like in practice.

The Many Ways to Be A Volunteering Hero

Helping Behind the Scenes

Our volunteers are the backbone of many vital day-to-day operations. You might:

  • Welcome visitors at reception
  • Assist with filing or organising resources
  • Drive young people to appointments or events
  • Help decorate, paint or tidy spaces in our accommodation services
  • Keep our outdoor areas inviting with some light gardening

While most roles don’t involve working directly with young people, they are essential in keeping our services running smoothly.

Supporting Events and Fundraising

If you enjoy a buzz of energy and community spirit, helping at events is a great way to get involved. You might:

  • Set up and pack down stalls
  • Serve refreshments
  • Greet attendees or provide directions
  • Collect donations
  • Support raffles, games or sales

From fetes and fairs to our annual Sleep Out, every event is a chance to raise awareness and funds for our mission.

Specialist Support Roles

Do you have a particular skill you’d like to offer? We sometimes seek occasional help with:

  • Capturing images or producing videos for our Marketing team
  • Running one-off workshops
  • Assisting with promotional material

These roles vary depending on current projects but offer a meaningful way to give back using your strengths.

Will I Work Directly with Young People?

Most volunteer roles at Step by Step are focused on supporting our teams and operations, rather than direct contact with young people. This ensures the young people we support are protected by consistent and trained staff teams.

But don’t underestimate your impact. Your help ensures that young people facing homelessness receive the stability, safety and opportunities they deserve.

Flexible, Supported, and Open to All

We understand that life is busy, and volunteering needs to fit around your other commitments. That’s why we offer:

  • Flexible roles that suit your schedule
  • Evening or weekend opportunities
  • Full training and ongoing support

You don’t need prior experience. If you care about young people and want to make a difference, we’ll give you everything you need to get started.

Our volunteers come from all walks of life – from retired professionals to students, part-time workers, and community-minded individuals with a couple of hours to spare.

Please note: we follow Safer Recruitment practices, so you will need to provide two references and pass a DBS check. We are committed to safeguarding and promoting their welfare and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

Ready to Get Started?

Volunteering with Step by Step means being part of something bigger. Every task, no matter how small, contributes to our mission of giving young people a better chance in life.

National Plan to End Homelessness

Will it Go Far Enough?

Row Of Houses Symbolising Analysis Of Housing Plan 2

We welcome the Government announcement of a new comprehensive homelessness strategy, including £3.5 billion investment over the next three years.

But its success will depend upon how much it offers a joined-up approach and a clear route from homelessness to independent living.
