Your Step By Step Interview Guide (1)

Work for Step by Step Your Step by Step Interview Guide

Wondering what your interview with Step by Step will involve? Our simple guide will tell you everything you need to know, including what to bring, wear and expect.

What should I wear for the interview?

We suggest smart casual clothes. That could be smart jeans or a skirt paired with a polo shirt, blouse or neat top. You don’t need to wear a suit - although you’re welcome to if it helps you feel confident.

Will the interview be in person or online?

Most interviews include at least one in-person stage. Sometimes, we start with an online interview and follow up with a face-to-face meeting. You’ll always be told in advance what to expect.

Who will be interviewing me?

At least two people will interview you, and one of them will be trained in Safer Recruitment practices. This helps ensure fairness, consistency and a safe environment for everyone involved.

What kind of questions will I be asked?

You’ll get a mix of competency-based questions and questions about your experience and approach to working with young people. For example:

  • “Tell us about a time you handled a difficult situation.”
  • “What experience do you have that’s relevant to this role?”

We’ll also ask about your full working history. Gaps in employment are fine - we just need them explained.

Do I need to bring anything to the interview?

If you’re attending in person, please bring:

  • Proof of your right to work in the UK (e.g. passport or visa)
  • Photo ID
  • Any relevant qualifications (original documents)

If you forget something, don’t worry. We’ll arrange a follow-up before your start date if needed.

Will I need a DBS check?

Yes, if the role involves working directly with young people. We’ll apply for an Enhanced DBS check and may ask you to join the DBS Update Service. You can start once we receive satisfactory results.

What happens after the interview?

We’ll contact you as soon as possible with the outcome. If successful, you’ll receive a conditional offer based on references, DBS checks and other pre-employment requirements.

What if I have a disability or need adjustments?

We’re committed to making reasonable adjustments at every stage of the recruitment process. Let us know what support you need - we’re here to help.

Can I apply if I’ve used Step by Step services before?

Yes—but you must have stopped using our services at least three years before applying.

What if I don’t have recent work experience?

That’s okay! We also accept references from academic institutions, volunteer roles or self-employment. Let us know and we’ll guide you through what’s needed.

Tips for Nervous Interviewees

Feeling nervous before an interview is completely normal. Here are a few ways to feel more confident:

  1. Do some research
    • Read about Step by Step and the role you’ve applied for.
  2. Practise common questions
    • Rehearse your answers with a friend or in front of a mirror.
  3. Take a moment to breathe
    • Let us know if you need a pause during the interview - it’s okay to take a break.
  4. Be yourself
    • We’re looking for people who care about making a difference. Just show us who you are.

Good luck with your Step by Step interview. We’re looking forward to meeting you.
