Brave Abseilers Take the Plunge for Young People Facing Homelessness

The Step by Step Abseil saw a group of fearless fundraisers take on the 100 metre drop from Portsmouth’s Spinnaker Tower, raising over £14,000 for young people going through hard times.

There was nervous chatter and shaking limbs as the daring group assembled, craning their necks and squinting their eyes against the sun to view their monolithic nemesis. One by one, the abseilers kitted up and disappeared into the tower, before appearing as a tiny dot 300 feet up.

With family, friends and the Step by Step team cheering them on, each slowly, pensively made their way down the near-vertical descent. Conditions were warm and windy, with the gusts blowing several of the abseilers off course.

Reaching the ground was met with a mixture of relief, euphoria and, for many, the determination that they were never doing that again!

Debbie Moreton, CEO, was one of the most relieved to have her feet back on the ground. “Coming down Spinnaker Tower was horrendous!” she told us. “Thank you to everyone who sponsored me. The comments on JustGiving really spurred me on, so thank you.”

While the heavy wind meant some abseilers were postponed until a future date, Step by Step’s first ever abseil was a great success and smashed its fundraising target.

Anda Chiu, Head of Fundraising, commented: “Our abseil participants quite literally stepped out of their comfort zone to help young people move beyond homelessness and towards brighter futures. We're incredibly grateful for their courage, commitment and support. By facing their fears, they're helping young people overcome theirs and take positive steps towards independent futures.”
